Montgomery, AL is a city that has a long history that is still present in its facades to this day. It was founded in 1819 by merging the neighboring towns of East Alabama and New Philadelphia, and takes its name from General Richard Montgomery, who died in the Revolutionary War. Montgomery, Alabama became the state capitol in 1846 and in 1861 briefly became the capitol of the Confederate States of America before the capitol was moved to Richmond, Virginia. It was while he was pastor at a Baptist church in Montgomery that Dr. Martin Luther King Junior became the driving force behind the Civil Rights movement, and in a Montgomery city bus that Rosa Parks made her historic refusal to give up her seat.

Today Montgomery, Alabama is known as a center for education. Along with a multitude of technical colleges, the city is home to Alabama State University and campuses from Auburn University and Faulkner University. The largest institution, however, is the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, which has an enrollment of over 100,000 in programs ranging from air war to officer's school.
